Kurt Pio at Graanmarkt13

Graanmarkt 13 is very happy to announce an exhibition with Kurt Pio in the gallery space. Pio is an artist who lives and works in Capetown, South Africa. He is an artistic chameleon who has been featured in magazines such as GQ, Wallpaper, House & Garden, Elle and Visi.

In the beginning of this year his solo exhibition opened the new SMITH Studio gallery in Capetown. At Graanmarkt 13 his new series of portraits Boys, will be shown to the public for the very first time. Aside from that, the botanical paintings that made him famous, will be on display. So is his more recent series Diamonds, which is inspired by Pio’s interest in minerals and his passion for his native city. Diamonds is an experiment with depth and shape, abstraction and realism, light and shadows. This way, a bridge between Capetown and Antwerp, the world center of diamonds is created.

Kurt: Travel, Architecture, fashion. Social media, Instagram, celebrity documentaries and currently 1970's Italian and American interior design.

What is your favorite piece so far?
Kurt: A malachite painted surfboard sculpture, for a solo show, I did, titled 'Cape Town' at Smith Studio Gallery in Cape Town.

Do you have a theme or concept that you would like to explore in the near future?
Kurt: Yes I'd like to look at masks and the role of disguise. 'Fake' or 'fake it till you make it' or pretend themes in society. And I'll always tie the theme into a South African context but something also familiar to the rest of the world.
